3 Tips for Decluttering Your Life

If you have decided that now is the time to streamline and declutter your life, you are not alone. Many people every year decide to declutter. Some are embracing a minimalist lifestyle while others just want to be able to more easily navigate and organize their home. Whichever is the case for you, there are some tips that can help you to declutter your home successfully. Get to know a few of these and then you can get your decluttering process started right away.

Go By Category Rather Than By Room

One of the best tips to help you declutter your home is to choose to go by category of items rather than by room. If you get everything from one category together, you can see just how much you have, if you have any duplicates, and you can more easily determine how much you want to get rid of.

Start with something easy to categorize like clothes. Just like Marie Kondo says, put it all in a pile on a bed or somewhere in your home. Then, begin sorting through it deciding what you want to keep and what you can part with. Do the same with other categories, like dishes, kitchen gadgets, tools, books, DVDs, toys, pet supplies, and everything else in your home.

Choose How You Will Decide What Stays and What Goes

In order to make your decluttering process successful, you will need to choose a method of how you will determine what stays in your home and what goes. Again, Marie Kondo says that you should keep things that "spark joy." Other methods are a bit more practical. For example, if you have not worn or used something in 6-12 months, you could declutter it.

Some people also do a "half-declutter" of items. If they have not used them in 6-12 months or are unsure about getting rid of them, seal them in a box with other such items. Put the boxes away in a closet, garage, or basement where they are out of sight and out of mind. If you need something from those boxes in the next 6-12 months, then keep it. If not, donate or trash it.

Save Organizing Until Last

It can be very tempting to start organizing the items you are keeping as you go through the decluttering process. However, until you see all of the space you have available to you when everything you want to get rid of is gone, you will not be able to determine the best storage solutions for your home.

In your garage, for example, once everything you don't want or need is gone, you can have custom garage storage designed and installed to hold the items you did choose to keep and keep them organized and in good condition.
